Shipley grabs four medals

COLUMBUS- The Portsmouth Trojans took Lynsey Shipley to the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to compete in the State track championships this passed weekend. The Trojan’s star did not disappoint.

Shipley took home four medals on the day. She placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57:02. She took third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12:59. She placed sixth in both the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.91, and in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet and 10 inches.

“She’s amazing,” said Coach Arthur Lard. “She went undefeated all year in the 400-meter dash. She was tied for high point medalist in four meets and she won two meets outright. She’s a competitor”

Shipley has broken three school records this season for the dash: 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters. The 400-meter record breaks the one she had previously held from her freshman year.

“She does all this and she’s only a sophomore,” remarked Coach Lard. “She was all academic all Ohio, too. She really works hard and she’s very intelligent.”

Shipley was the Southeastern District player of the year. She has two years to further solidify her place in not only Portsmouth history, but at a state level as well.

“I expect nothing different out of her in the coming two years here at Portsmouth. In fact, I expect more. Last year she came in to states with three events and came out with a single win. This year, she went four for four. She was more relaxed and focused and you could really tell.”

“I want her to improve on her times across the board. I know she has what it takes to come out a gold medalist, especially in the 400 meter. She’s a pleasure to have. She’s a great student, a great athlete, and I’m blessed to be her coach. She is a once in a lifetime girl to find.”
