The Pirates prepare to face the Buckeyes in week 2 of the football Playoffs in

SOC Champions, the undefeated Wheelersburg Pirates, will face off against Nelsonville-York Buckeyes Saturday night at Ironman stadium in Jackson for round two of the playoffs.

Pirate coach Rob Woodward said he has reviewed footage of the Buckeyes and has been preparing his team for a rough match.

“Nelsonville’s an explosive team. They have some key players that make some big plays,” Woodward stated.

When the two teams meet on the field, the Pirates know exactly what to expect. Woodward explained that the Buckeyes have quarterback Hunter Edwards who is “explosive with his feet” and can throw a “good, deep ball.” The coach also said the Pirate opposition has a great tailback, a freshman with a great jump cut.

“They’re extremely explosive on offense,” Woodward stressed.

But Nelsonville has some mean offensive strategies as well and a tendency to tackle in open field.

Still, the Pirate are a fiercely talented team with an impressive ability to adapt and overcome all tactics. Woodward explained that the Pirates are going to have to bring a sound execution of defense in order to limit Nelsonville from pulling off those big plays they are known for. Wheelersburg also plans to test their abilities from all parts of the field.

“We want to stay balanced. We have ability for making teams be accountable for both sides in any given formation, having to play all sides of the field, Woodward commented. “We have to be fundamental in how we play defense.”

The Pirates have scored 428 points this season and given away 87. Burg is ranked 76 in the State.

Nelsonville is ranked 206 in the State, have scored 441 points this season and given away 154 points.

Both teams have great football programs with some very skilled athletes. It should be an interesting week two.

Despite the skill level of the Buckeyes, Woodward believes in his Pirates and their abilities on the field.

“If we can play downhill, I think it’ll help us to be successful.

The Wheelersburg Pirates will kick off against the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes at 7 p.m.
