Free Yourself from the opinion of man, part two

Some years ago I wrote a column entitled, ‘Free yourself from the opinion of man.’ Do you ever get distracted by focusing on another person’s opinion about you? I suspect that if we are honest, we could all answer yes to this question. Personally speaking, I can recall many times in my life when I have allowed myself to become consumed with negative thoughts, feelings, and perceptions of others towards me which I can now look back and label as a futile use of precious time. For doing so, allowing your mind to be cluttered with worry of other people’s opinion can become so detrimental to the one consumed by it, that the individual is robbed of their peace, energy, creativity, positively and so forth. Now 46 years old, this is what I know—-God’s opinion of you is the one to be concerned about, his, and his alone. Whether you succeed or fail, people will always choose to form an opinion about you, even when they don’t know you or your motives, or your values or purpose. In fact, some people seem to thrive on forming opinions based upon ignorance, it is just what they do, and just as sure as there is an eternal resting place in glory called heaven, there is an eternal, horrific place of damnation called hell which is stored up for those who choose to live this way.

Nonetheless, if perhaps you find yourself ensnared in the clutches of the opinion of man, allow me to give you this charge, loose yourself! Yes, decide right now that you are going to shift your thoughts from “what people think” about you. Did you know that the most important thing in this life, and in the life to come is pleasing God? If you live your life endeavoring to please God in all of your ways, your life will become an inexpressible domain of joy and peace of mind. The latter portion of a scripture in the Bible which I love found in IICorinthians 3:17 states, “…and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” Imagine that! Wherever God’s Spirit dwells there is freedom! Do you need freedom in your life today? Are you bound, living in darkness or depression? Is the opinion of man overshadowing your life? Well my friend, today is your day. You can have true, lasting freedom in Christ Jesus, and experience true “independence.”
