In celebration of National Senior Citizens Day, on Friday, Aug. 19, Portsmouth’s senior group, ‘Alive & Kicking’ (A &K) will host, ‘A Senior Affair’ at the 14th Street Community Center, 1222 14 Street in Portsmouth from 5-8 p.m., for seniors age 55 and up.
The idea behind ‘A Senior Affair’ is to inspire seniors to live, laugh, and love. The event will include a host of senior-friendly activities, and games that are easy to master. Ruby Grant, temporary chairperson of the Activities Committee for A & K, said the celebration of National Senior Citizens Day is advantageous on numerous levels.
“Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day allows us to promote and raise awareness in affirming the dignity and value of senior citizens in our community as well as nationally. Seniors represent a large and growing proportion of the population,” Grant said.
It was in 1988 that National Senior Citizens Day was instituted and proclaimed.
“On Aug. 19, 1988, the Congress, by House Joint Resolution 136, designated August, 21st as ‘National Senior Citizens Day’, signed by President Ronald Reagan who issued a proclamation in observance of this event,” Grant said.
Grant also said ‘A Senior Affair’ will acknowledge the contributions made daily by senior citizens through a variety of vocations and roles.
“Our Senior Affair event will pay tribute to and show appreciation for the contributions that seniors have made and continue to make every day in our community as mentors, teachers, volunteers, building our families, workplaces and role models,” Grant said. “We invite community seniors age 55 and older to join us. All are welcome. It will be a time of enlightenment, entertainment and enjoyment with friends and neighbors.”
Bill Netter, president of A & K, said ‘A Senior Affair’ is about having fun and possibly establishing new friendships.
“We been working really hard to put this event together. We are both delighted and excited, and just want to provide an opportunity for people to be able come together, and for people to make new friends and fun some fun in the process,” Netter said. “We just hope hope all the seniors will come out and join us on Friday.”
Netter will also speak at the event and provide a description of future A & K events.
