Greenup, Ky. — With the 2016-2017 school year fast approaching for many districts, vaccinations or physical examinations are part school enrollment requirements. Henceforth, The Greenup County Health Department (GCHD) is holding a Back-to-School vaccination clinic Aug. 8-10 to ensure that students of Greenup County are protected.
The vaccination service is offered primarily to children that are uninsured, under-insured or if your family doctor does not offer vaccinations, according to GCHD officials. The dates are: Aug. 8, 7:30 a.m. -4:30 p.m.; Aug. 9, 7:30 a.m.- 6 p.m.; and Aug. 10, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Connie Wilburn, the Nurse Administrator for the GCHD, said vaccinations are among the most important things that parents can take action on for the protection of their children.
“Vaccines are important because they are a safe and effective way to protect against serious sometimes fatal diseases and they are one of the most important things that you can do to protect the health of your child,” Wilburn said.
Advance appointment for their student on the scheduled dates is not required. Either show up at the health department that morning at 7:30 a.m. or call at 8 a.m. to be scheduled for later that day.
Paul Hunt, health services coordinator of GCHD, said vaccinations are vital for defense against diseases.
“Vaccinations are the first line of defense against dangerous diseases. Any time we see a decline in vaccinations for children, we will see a rise in childhood disease. This is without a doubt one of the best prevention steps you can take for your family’s health,” Hunt said.
Some things to remember about our Back-to-School vaccination clinics:
Child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Some insurances are now accepted to cover (in part or in full) the cost of vaccination. Call 606-473-9838 to ask about your coverage. Children should be well and have eaten before coming to the clinic.
GCHD officials advise that If your child has not been vaccinated at the Health Department, you must bring an updated immunization record to the clinic. If you have Medicaid or insurance be sure to bring your card. Although the health department cannot provide physicals to Passport Medicaid participants, immunizations can be provided.
GCHD does not offer sports physicals. For more information, call the GCHD at 606-473-9838.
