Just as last week ended with a heatwave, the National Weather Service is calling for temperatures to rise back up into the 90s by the end of this week in Scioto County. Thursday’s predicted high is 89. It is expected to reach 92 on Friday and 93 on Saturday. That means precautions must be taken if you expose yourself to those temps.

“What I always tell people, particularly the working middle-aged people and young people that are out there working, they should hydrate, and the best hydration is just water and drink plenty of it,” Scioto County Health Commissioner Dr. Aaron Adams said. “and have Gatorade, Powerade, those types of electrolyte replacement fluids on board too and take your breaks.”

What about clothing?

“Dress for the weather – wear sunscreen if you’re out directly in the sun to protect yourself from skin cancer,” Adams said. “Dress with light colored clothing and make sure you can take your breaks and sit in the shade. If you get a chance to go inside and cool off in air conditioning, make sure you do and be ready to go back to work tomorrow.”

There is one more thing Adams recommends.

“Make sure you see your physician and get a checkup to make sure that your blood pressure is normal, your blood sugars are normal, your cholesterol is normal, to make sure you’re not endangering yourself with rick factors if you’re out there, even if you’re a young individual in your 40s and 50s, of having a heart attack or a stroke in this kind of climate conditions,” Adams said.

If the sun is out to get you…get it first:

  • Drink More Water. …
  • Keep Excessive Sweat at Bay. …
  • Make a DIY Air Conditioner. …
  • Optimize Your Fans. …
  • Keep Your Food Cool and Avoid Using the Oven. …
  • Exercise Comfortably, Even in the Heat. …
  • Optimize Your Windows. …
  • Cool Your Car Down Quickly.
