Cupcake Wars winners receive statewide certificate

LUCASVILLE – One of the area’s best kept secrets is out of the bag. Folks have been coming to 83 Sweets Cupcakes in Lucasville for delicious treats for a while, but on Tuesday, Jim Milliken, Regional Liaison with Region 8, of the Ohio Secretary of State’s office, stopped by to present the owners, Julie Blackburn and Alyssa Logan, with a certificate and commendation to commemorate their being a featured business in the Secretary of State’s Ohio Business Profile Program.

“Once every month they profile businesses throughout the state of Ohio,” Milliken said. “And for this past May it was for women who owned businesses. They pick a different theme every month and this is one of the businesses that was picked because it’s owned by women and I’m very happy to be here.”

Blackburn and Logan are a mother and daughter team and gained fame when the won the competition on The Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.

“It started out as an online bakery. Alyssa lived in Dayton and she asked me to be her assistant on Cupcake Wars, and I’m thinking, that’s not going to happen, but it actually did – twice,” Blackburn said. “After the second show, we decided to open to the public and to say, hit the ground running, is putting it really lightly. The community has just be awesome in our growth. They love everything we do and we love our customers like they’re friends and family.”

Winning a national TV competition was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the folks at 83 Sweets Cupcakes.

“It (Cupcake Wars) was definitely very stressful,” Logan said. “But we were very fortunate to be picked to compete and we won. We were very fortunate. We won $10,000 and we got to do a celebrity event with Australian pop singer Cody Simpson and we got to go to Los Angeles. They flew us out there and we competed against three other teams. There’s three rounds of elimination and we got down to the final round of elimination and we won.”

The company is an 80s-themed bakery that sources local ingredients for over 83 custom flavors. More information is available at 83sweets.com or by calling 740-259-2253.
