Kathy Milligan to Retire

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — This fall, for the first time in 36 years, prinicipal Kathy Milligan will not be a part of the daily life of Notre Dame High School.

“One thing I can say is, I have been very blessed in life to have a job that I have loved,” explained Milligan. “And I don’t see it as a job because I’ve enjoyed it so much. There are days where you have to make tough decisions and it can be rough, but as a whole it’s just been great, like I said, I’ve been blessed.”

Milligan has served as principal at Notre Dame since August of 1995 and will be retiring at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, which is coming to an end.

“Everyone keeps asking me ‘well what are you going to do?’ I hope to do some travelling and enjoy my grandchildren more and spend time with my family. Then I guess I can just do what I want, when I want, if I want, and enjoy the freedom of that, I don’t know how it’ll be but I’ll have to give it a try,” Milligan joked.

In 1980, Milligan joined the staff at Notre Dame High School. She started her career teaching seventh and eighth grade math and religion courses. She also taught home economics before taking on the role of principal.

She earned a bachelor degree in math with a minor in education from Mt. St Joseph College and went on to earn a master degree in education from The Ohio State University.

During her 21 year tenure, the school has added many advanced placement courses to the curriculum and completed several improvement projects like a brand new Innovation Center, equipped with Ipads and IMac’s for students to use.

Milligan has not only supported the academic and scholastic achievements of her students, but the athletic accomplishments as well. There have been improvements made to the gym consisting of a new gym floor and new bleachers, and the addition of a brand new field house.

“What I hear most from students is that she is like a mother. She comes to their sporting events to cheer them on and she makes herself present in the halls and classrooms, she makes the school feel like home,” said Notre Dame’s Development Director, Brandy Setters.

Earlier this year, the Diocese of Columbus’ Office of Catholic Schools announced that Thomas Walker will take over as principal starting with the 2016-2017 year.

“I am pleased and very humbled to have the opportunity to work with the dedicated staff at Notre Dame High School. I just feel very fortunate. I hope to carry on their strong Catholic teachings and the traditions of the church,” Walker said.

Milligan will be missed by her staff and the students but she is confident that great things are to come in the future and warns that the students haven’t seen the last of her yet. She plans on staying involved with the school district and continuing her attendance at sporting events.
