Rosemount Road Closure

ROSEMOUNT, Ohio — Rosemount Road will be temporarily closed Friday, May 20 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The senior students from Clay High School have partnered with the Lawrence and Scioto County Solid Waste Management District to remove litter and debris from the roadway and the surrounding area.

“We live in a beautiful area, and Rosemount Road is right in the middle of our community,” Clay Principal Todd Warnock said. “A lot of people travel that road on a daily basis and there is a lot of trash and litter, it’s unbelievable the amount of the things that get thrown out there.”

The seniors were offered the opportunity to volunteer during the last day of school. Every year the students participate in a community service project. Warnock says almost all of the students choose to help.

“I came up with the idea about five or six years ago,” explained Dan Palmer, the director of the Solid Waste District, “I know Todd and I asked him if his students would be interested in doing a project like this and he said, ‘absolutely.’ It was so successful, I think those kids collected about 80 or 90 bags of litter. I thought ‘it’s time to do it again’ and I asked if they’d like to participate this year.”

Student safety is the number one priority and that is the reason for the closure. County Engineer Craig Opperman will be blockading the road during the pickup.

“I don’t put students in a predicament where they could be endangered,” said Palmer, “We have to shut it down.”

To reward the students for their service, the Solid Waste District will be providing them with a pizza party. The district tried to arrange the cleanup time during a time of low traffic to eliminate conflict with commuters.

“When we’ve done this in the past, I know the people were disgruntled with the road being closed. I ask them to have patience with us, I think it’s important to raise awareness about littering with the public, as well as with the students. I hope that people respect us for doing this, and the students for taking their time to come and help. Please do not litter after they’ve take the time to do all this cleaning,” said Palmer.

Students will be conducting a clean-up of the road May 20.
