‘CarFit’ to ensure safe driving for seniors

PORTSMOUTH — Hill View Life Plan Community is partnering with Shawnee State University’s Occupational Therapy Program to host ‘CarFit.’ It is an outdoor vehicle check-up event for senior citizens on Friday, April 29 on the rear parking lot of Hill View.

By participating in CarFit,’ local seniors will have the opportunity to discover the perfect ‘fit’ for personal use of their vehicle through an interactive and educational program that teaches them how to make their personal vehicle “fit” them to increase safety and mobility.

Angela Adams, outreach director at Hill View, said the CarFit Program is advantageous for senior citizens.

“This is a great opportunity for seniors. It is free, and outdoors with you and your car, and is an educational event that teaches participants how to make their personal vehicle fit them and to ensure their safety when they drive,” Adams said. “The whole program is developed to help mature drivers, senior citizens, find their safest fit between them, and their personal vehicle.”

Adams is hopeful that many seniors will make their way out to Hill View on April 29, to reap the benefits of the CarFit program.

CarFit is a 12 area check system that reviews space, settings, and restraint positions that will give seniors a peace of mind about their personal safety. Each checkup takes approximately 20 minutes, and the participant doesn’t have to leave their vehicle.

Adams wanted to reiterate that CarFit is not a driving test or mechanical inspection, but is an educational program. CarFit will convene on April 29, beginning at 11 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. technicians will be available to assist.

Directions to the event are as follows:

Entering from the intersection of Shawnee Avenue/Dorman Drive, drivers will proceed up Hill View Drive and follow the directional signs going up the hill.

Light refreshments will be served, and a free gift bag is given to all who participate.

An appointment is suggested, but not a requirement. To make an appointment for this free event, calls should be directed 740-351-3169. For more information about CarFit, visit www.car-fit.org.
