OLIVE HILL, Ky. – There’s a saying that people don’t leave bad jobs, they leave bad managers. To help businesses learn the skills they need to lead and motivate their team, the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center offers John C. Maxwell Leadership Training.
“John Maxwell is a trainer in leadership improvement. He’s the author of dozens of best-selling books, and he has trained various international companies and individuals,” said Tammy Hambrick, ESC curriculum supervisor.
A training session was offered to Region 15 school superintendents during a conference on April 20-22, at Carter Caves, in Olive Hill, Ky.
“Research shows that leadership has an impact on school success and achievement,” Hambrick said. “There is a clear correlation between the leadership skills of the person in charge and the level of growth attained by a business or organization.”
The superintendents’ training centered on Maxwell’s 1998 book, “21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership,” which identifies the 21 most common traits of effective leadership. After introducing these laws to the training participants, they were each asked to self-assess their strengths and weaknesses in these areas. From that, five specific areas of focus were identified and discussed.
The experience left a big impression on the participating superintendents.
“The training was fantastic,” said Jodi Armstrong, superintendent of Green Local Schools. “One of the most powerful takeaways for me was the message that a leader’s focus is on mobilizing people and leveraging resources to achieve their goals. Leaders who want to succeed maximize every asset and resource they have for the benefit of their organization.”
Sandy Mers, superintendent of the South Central Ohio ESC, said the session was engaging and informative.
“The curriculum team utilized many of the leadership traits while introducing the group to the laws. The session left most of the group wanting more, not only for themselves but for their teams in the prospective districts. It was a very well-planned and professionally delivered training that any professional could use,” Mers said.
