Recently at a meeting of the Pittsburgh Region of McDonald’s, two area general managers were given the Outstanding General Managers Award.
Locally Ray Shonkwiler, manager of Portsmouth McDonald’s, and Karen Timberlake, manager of the Vanceburg, Kentucky, McDonald’s were given the award.
Shonkwiler said only the 10 percent of general managers are eligible to receive this distinction.
According to information about the award, “The award is given based on achieving superior results in operational excellence, delivering people systems and building the business. Managers who are nominated must demonstrate clear and convincing evidence of their excellence.”
Shonkwiler said the award came as a surprise and is the result of years of work.
“McDonald’s is more than a job for me. It’s my family, it’s my wife and my child,” Shonkwiler said. “I enjoy developing people and that’s what I do here, I can help people in many ways by working here, be it in a fundraising event, developing new crew members or guiding new managers. I can honestly say that I am McDonalds and there is nothing I like better than being part of this team.”
Shonkwiler is known throughout the community for going above and beyond in raising money for various charities.
He has helped to organize fundraisers for the Autism Project of Southern Ohio, Steven Hunter Hope Fund and many others at the Portsmouth McDonald’s.
Most recently Shonkwiler helped to present Mary Waugh of New Boston Elementary with a McDonald’s Balance, Active Lifestyle Grant for the eighth time.
The Portsmouth McDonald’s is located at 2624 Gallia Street in Portsmouth and can be reached at 740-353-7193.
