Celebrity Chefs, Week two

0

PORTSMOUTH — The 8th Annual Celebrity Chef Dinner and Silent Auction is Tuesday, March 1, at the Friends Community Center, with doors opening at 6 p.m. This exciting event, sponsored by The Counseling Center, is a fundraiser for the Summer Outreach Club, now in its 27th year. The Summer Outreach Club, a part of prevention and outreach services, is a nine-week summer day camp program that is free to children ages 5-12 in Scioto County and beyond. The camp offers free breakfast and lunch, motivational, educational and recreational activities in a hands-on learning environment, all while partnering with multiple community agencies and volunteers within the area who graciously teach classes, mentor and support the over 120 kids each day.

Every year the success of the event is due to the participants that partner with Celebrity Chef Committee planners to make this event a huge success for area kids who attend the program. From now until March 1, this year’s chefs will be featured discussing their love of cooking and the dish they will be preparing. This event would not be possible with these talented, philanthropic, community stars who often give of their time and talents to support positive community initiatives. This week’s feature chefs are Joe and Amy Glockner, Will Burke and Maxine and La’Toshia Malone.

Celebrity Chefs’ Bio

Name: Joe and Amy Glockner.

Job/Title: Joe- Director of Finance, Glockner Enterprises, Amy The Boss.

What is your fondest cooking memory?

Watching, learning the basics of culinary preparedness from my grandmother on any given Sunday. I never remember seeing a recipe card or measuring instrument present. There was never any rushing around to finish a dish on time. Everything was always delicious and ready to serve at 5 o’clock sharp. I also learned the difference between a pinch and a dash could be up to 1 cup

How long have your lived/worked in the community?

We have been part of this community for the majority of our 38 plus year lives.

What Is Your Favorite Food?

Anything that can be considered a “cheat” meal.

What or Who Inspires You to Do Good, and Why?

Our parents have been great role models to us both. It would be hard to not want to lead by their example.

Why Did You Want To Be a Part of the Celebrity Chef Dinner? Joe has two left feet, so that immediately disqualifies him from participating in Dancing with Our Stars. On a serious note, we enjoy good food and great company, so it just seemed fitting to want to be part of the event

Do you know what appetizer you will be making and if so, what is it?

Cowboy Candy, a jalapeno that has been candied to perfection, sitting a top of a beautiful dollop of cream cheese that just so happens to be joined by a sliver of delicious thick sliced bacon, all residing on a multi grain cracker.

Celebrity Chef Bio

Name: Will Burke.

Job title and company: Director of Maintenance—OSCO Industries.

What is your fondest cooking memory?

Helping my mom make cookies and mistakenly adding a cup of salt (instead of a ¼ teaspoon) and seeing my dad’s face after he ate one of the cookies.

How long have your lived/worked in the community?

Six years.

What or who inspires you to do good, and why?

My Parents, and seeing and understanding why they spend so much time doing community service.

Why did you want to be a part of the celebrity chef dinner? This is a great cause and an event that sounds like a lot of fun.

Do you know what appetizer you will be making and if so, what is it? Yes, I’ll be doing pulled pork sliders, with

South Carolina style barbecue.

How long have your lived/worked in the community?

Lived and worked in the community for over 40 years.

What is your favorite food? Sweet potatoes

What or who inspires you to do good, and why?

My family. I want them to see that they can be successful in anything they do. Also the youth of the community, they are out future and next generation. I want to be a mentor to them.

Why did you want to be a part of the celebrity chef dinner? I thought it would be exciting, new and fun, and tasting different foods, also getting exposure for Welcome to Nelsonville Catering.

Do you know what appetizer you will be making and if so, what is it? Sampling of different ideas using homemade bread, that we have been making for many years, including horseshoe, hay stacks, and a variety of western themes.
