An accident occurred early Monday afternoon on State Route 139 in Scioto County that resulted in one person being flown to an area hospital for treatment.
Sargent John Howard of the Portsmouth Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the agency was reluctant to release the name of the person involved because they were uncertain if the family had been notified of the accident.
“He (unidentified driver) was headed northbound in a Roto Rooter Van and was pulling a trailer. He drove off the right side of the roadway and into a very deep culvert. At that point, he lost the trailer,” Howard said.
He said the driver was able to get onto the road and drove roughly another half mile on the wrong side of the road. The driver then drove off the roadway again hitting a guard rail and a tree before overturning in a field.
Howard said when first responders arrived on the scene it was evident the driver had done one revolution of roll-over, before the van came to rest on its wheels.
Howard said the incident only involved the one van and although the official cause of the accident is still under investigation he said, “we are highly suspicious of, some sort of medical issue (involved with the driver).”
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at the scene, the driver was treated by members of the Rubyville Fire Department and Clay EMS, then flown from the scene to Saint Mary’s Medical Center.
The accident remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
