Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) sounds the “pink” alarm during the month of October for National Breast Cancer Awareness month with the annual ‘Paint It Pink’ (PIP) Campaign accompanied by a calendar of events for the month. T-shirts for PIP will go on sale on Sept. 30.

Wendi Waugh, administrative director SOMC Cancer Center & Community Health & Wellness, said PIP is a community wide opportunity to offer support to those struggling with cancer.

“PIP happens only once a year and not only does it raise awareness of the importance of cancer screenings it is a community wide opportunity to support those who might be battling the disease,” Waugh said. “Three in four families in our community are affected by cancer and therefore it is not likely that our own families won’t be affected. If they aren’t, certainly your neighbors will be. The only way to make a difference is to join together. This campaign does that.”

Kim Richendollar, RN, Breast Health Navigator of Cancer Services at SOMC, said PIP is all about awareness and encouraging women to undergo screening

“The entire Paint It Pink Campaign, of course is to promote breast cancer awareness, and to emphasize to women how important it is to get that screening mammogram, if you meet the qualifications,” Richendollar said. “So, for SOMC, that is kind of the importance to bring breast cancer awareness in our community and to promote mammography, because we know that breast cancer that is diagnosed in early stages is very treatable, and it can be curative.”
