The Scioto Foundation is pleased to announce a new Acorn Fund established by the New Boston Alumni Association. Created to help continue the organization’s long-time scholarship fund, the New Boston Alumni Scholarship Fund will build an endowment through donations that will benefit graduates of the New Boston School System in future years.
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a graduate or graduating senior of Glenwood High School. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above as a graduating senior, as documented by a current transcript of grades which includes the GPA through the 3rd nine weeks of the senior year and the last report card received, or a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above on a college transcript. Applicants must reapply for consideration each year.
The New Boston Alumni Association will make annual selections for the scholarships. In the event that the Association ceases to exist, the Board of the Scioto Foundation or the volunteer scholarship committee of the Scioto Foundation will make the annual selections.
Preference will be given to salutatorians and/or valedictorians.
The New Boston Alumni Association has teamed up with the Scioto Foundation due to concerns about declining attendance at their annual banquet which has always raised funds for scholarships, according to President Helen Scherer.
“The Association is concerned about the continuity of the annual fundraiser,” said Scherer. “As college tuition and related expenses continue to rise, our hope is that our fellow alumni will contribute to the Acorn Fund so the fund can provide scholarships to our graduating seniors and fellow alumni. The Acorn Fund objective is synonymous with the goals of our Association and together, we can continue to assist students in their quest for a post-secondary education.
The New Boston Alumni Association was founded in 1995 when Jean Arthur Riffe and Ruth Hoover Evans contacted Glenwood High School alumni. The first banquet, held in 1996 in the high school gym, drew 234 people from the classes of 1930 – 1991. In 1997 the banquet was moved to the American Legion, Post 23 site.
“In early years, banquet attendance exceeded 400, but recent years have seen a steady decline, due in part to smaller graduating classes at Glenwood H.S. and an increasing number of deceased members,” Scherer said.
Proceeds of the annual banquet are used to fund Merit Scholarships to graduating seniors and alumni. The Alumni Association also administers scholarships funded by two individuals named in their honor. In 1997 the Association awarded two $300 scholarships. As of July, 2016, the Association has awarded a total of $131,850 in scholarships.
Anyone wishing to make a donation directly to the Scioto Foundation on behalf of the New Boston Alumni Association should make checks payable to: New Boston Alumni Association and mail them to the Scioto Foundation, 303 Chillicothe Street, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662.
