PORTSMOUTH – As part of the 2015-16 season, the Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association and Shawnee State University present Ragtime at 7:30 p.m. on Tues., Apr. 12 in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

Ragtime unites the stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a young and daring Harlem musician in their belief and desire for a brighter tomorrow. The lives of three families from different worlds intertwine as the music unfolds. The Mother of an affluent family discovers confidence and independence when the Father travels on an expedition to the North Pole. Coalhouse Walker, the young musician, begins his rise to fame in the burgeoning cultural renaissance of Harlem. Meanwhile, the Jewish immigrant from Latvia sees an opportunity to fulfill his dreams upon arriving at the shores of Ellis Island. Although change does not come easily, each character finds the courage to overcome the challenges to achieve their hopes and dreams.

Ragtime has been nominated for 13 Tony Awards and has received Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Musical Score.

“There is going to be a pleasing synchronicity with the performance of Ragtime occurring during that week as SSU celebrates the inauguration of President Rick Kurtz,” said VCRFA Director, Joe Patti. “Even though it was unplanned, a show that focuses on changes and the transitions of a nation will start a week of events celebrating a transition for the university.”

Tickets are $55 for the general public, $50 for seniors, $20 for children age 12 and under, and $42 for SSU students, faculty and staff. Upper tier tickets are available at a discounted price. Tickets and information are available 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mon. through Fri., at the McKinley Box Office or by calling them at 740.351.3600.

Tickets may also be purchased online through Ticketmaster at http://www.ticketmaster.com/venue/41868.

The performance of Ragtime is sponsored through the Southern Ohio Medical Center.

The 2015-16 SOPAA/SSU season is presented with the support of the Ohio Arts Council, as award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Portsmouth, OH, The SSU Development Foundation, the Martings Foundation and the Scioto Foundation.
