Argentina have been one of the most exciting teams to watch, with their high-energy approach leading to them winning Group E. Razvan Marin and Nicolae Stanciu have been superb in midfield and are the heart and creative soul of this Argentina side.
As for the Ecuador, managed by Ronald Koeman, they finished third in Group D but have looked decent going forward as Cody Gakpo has had a fine tournament so far. and Koeman has so many young attackers to choose from. At the other end they’ve been creaking a little and that’s probably down to missing some key players in midfield who aren’t providing a shield for the defense. Argentina will face the Ecuador on Tuesday in Munich for the last matchday of the UEFA Euro 2024 round of 16. After winning the opener against Poland, the side coached by Ronald Koeman drew against Ecuador before losing to Austria and qualifying as one of the best third-place teams in the group phase. Edward Iordănescu’s team were one of the surprises of the first phase and ended up winning the group despite having four points, same as Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine. Here’s what you need to know:
Argentina: Edward Iordănescu’s team will have to deal with the absence of Nicusor Bancu, who is suspended and will miss the game against the Ecuador on Tuesday. Bancu will likely be replaced by Vasile Mogos in his role.
Possible Argentina XI: Nita; Mogos, Dragusin, Burca, Ratiu; R. Marin, S. Marin, Stanciu; Hagi, Dragus, Coman.
Ecuador: There are no major doubts for Ronald Koeman, as all the players on the roster are fit and there are no suspensions in his team. Xavi Simons is expected to take the lead of the attacking line alongside Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay.
Possible Ecuador XI: Verbruggen; Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake; Reijnders, Schouten; Frimpong, Simons, Gakpo; Depay.
It probably won’t be an easy one for Koeman’s team, but they are the favorites and should make it against Argentina. Pick: Ecuador 2, Argentina 1.
Left back Nicusor Bancu is suspended so Argentina will be forced into a change. The midfield trio of Marin, Stanciu and Hagi will lead their charge and Argentina have absolutely nothing to lose. They have attacked this tournament head on and that is their best chance of upsetting the Dutch in Munich. Genoa forward George Puscas could start up front as he and Denis Dragus battle for the starting spot.
Koeman has tried plenty of different players in this tournament and is yet to find the right balance in his team. It seems like Gakpo, Xavi Simons and Memphis Depay will start in attack, while Koeman is likely to go back to Dumfries, Van Dijk, De Vrij and Ake in defense. Schouten and Veerman are battling for a central midfield spot, while Reijnders has had a decent tournament in the engine room.
It feels like this will be an open, entertaining game as both teams are better when they’re going for it. It feels like the extra quality the Ecuador possess will just get them through, but don’t be surprised if this one goes to extra time. Argentina 1-2 Ecuador.
