Euro 2024 has been a thrilling tournament crammed with exciting matches and fantastic goals but the one thing it has lacked is major upsets. Well, that is apart from Belgium vs Slovakia. Belgium were the clear favorites ahead of kick-off but limped to a 0-1 defeat after conceding within the opening 10 minutes. Striker Romelu Lukaku did find the back of the net twice but both goals were ruled out by VAR adding further misery to the result for Belgium.
Romania, meanwhile, made light work of Ukraine in their first game and could seal qualification for the knockout stages with what would be another famous victory. Group E looks upon too, with Ukraine beating Slovakia.

Belgium and Romania will battle it out next in Group E, as both teams look to claim a place in the knockout stages. On paper, Belgium are the strongest team in the group, but even with the kind of footballing power that includes Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, you can never take anything for granted. It has been 24 years since Romania have progressed to the knockout stage of the tournament. Can the Romanians take the fight to Belgium and claim three massive points?
Romania: Razvan Marin is one booking away from suspension while Valentin Mihaila could come in to replace Florinel Coman on the left. Mihaila missed out against Ukraine through illness but came on for 30 minutes and was a key figure in qualification with three of his four goals national team goals in that campaign.
Possible Romania XI: Nita; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu; R. Marin, M. Marin, Stanciu; Man, Dragus, Mihaila.
Belgium: Thomas Meunier missed out against Slovakia while Axel Witsel and Jan Vertonghen were also not fit enough to feature. Vertonghen is fit and could come in for Yannick Carrasco but Witsel’s availability is uncertain and Meunier is not expected back before the Ukraine game. Orel Mangala, Dodi Lukebakio and Youri Tielemans are on bookings while Johan Bakayoko will hope to start over Jeremy Doku or Leandro Trossard.
Possible Belgium XI: Casteels; Castagne, Debast, Faes, Theate; Tielemans, Onana; Doku, De Bruyne, Trossard; Lukaku.
Young was selected for the second series in a row, but after coming off the bench to play 23 minutes, coach Michael Maguire opted to drop the tenacious second-rower from the squad. Young was one of the few players that made way for a new look Blues team, but club coach Stuart has taken aim at the NSW camp for the same selection snub.
Thomas Meunier, Axel Witsel and Jan Vertonghen remain as doubts after missing the Slovakia loss on account of their respective issues. If Vertonghen is passed fit, the Anderlecht defender can replace Yannick Carrasco on the left, otherwise for Arthur Theate to take up the spot. Zeno Debast and Wout Faes would continue at the heart of defence, while Jeremy Doku and Leandro Trossard are more likely than Johan Bakayoko to accompany Kevin De Bruyne in midfield.
Victory in Cologne would send the Tricolors into the round of 16 and possibly in top spot while only one of their 16 games across all competitions has finished in defeat. They also have three consecutive clean sheets ahead of this game and beat Belgium the last time these two met back in a 2012 friendly.
