Brazil is going head to head with Colombia starting on 3 Jul 2024 at 01:00 UTC at Levi’s Stadium stadium, Santa Clara city, USA. The match is a part of the CONMEBOL Copa América, Group D.

Currently, Brazil rank 2nd, while Colombia hold 1st position. Looking to compare the best-rated player on both teams? Sofascore’s rating system assigns each player a specific rating based on numerous data factors.

The news of Keylor Navas retiring from international football was treated almost like the death of a head of state. And rightfully so. Navas is a hero in Costa Rica. With him in goal, Costa Rica always had a chance — even against the top teams in the world.

But Patrick Sequeira has long been waiting in the wings. The 25-year-old moved to Spain as a teenager and was considered the heir apparent for Navas. With the legendary goalkeeper entrenched as the starter, and other veterans called up in key moments, Sequeira played just two games with the senior team going into 2024. Going into Friday night, Sequeira had not given up a goal in any of his appearances this year, including a stunning 0-0 draw with Brazil to start this Copa América.

But Sequeira’s lack of experience at this level manifested with a silly mistake in the first half against Colombia when he charged out from goal and collided with Jhon Cordoba in the box. It was an unnecessary challenge. Francisco Calvo had the danger handled, and there was no immediate danger. Diaz buried the ensuing penalty to give Colombia the 1-0 lead going into halftime in what was otherwise another fairly solid half of defensive football from the Ticos.

For nearly half an hour, Costa Rica gave Colombia just as much trouble as they did Brazil in their previous Copa America Group D match, which ended in a surprising scoreless draw. But then goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira’s error in judgment led to Luis Diaz putting Colombia ahead from the penalty spot and they never looked back.

Colombia added two more goals in the second half thanks in part to the brilliant passing of James Rodriguez, confirming a place in the quarterfinals as they top the group with two wins in as many matches.

Uruguay are international football’s perennial overachievers, consistently performing well in tournaments despite a population of only around 3.5 million.

They won the tournament’s first edition on their way to collecting six of the first nine and 15 in total, a record they share with Argentina.

Like Uruguay, Argentina had most of their success before the tournament changed its name from the South American Football Championship in 1975, winning 12 of their 15 trophies before 1960. In 2021, however, they got their hands on the trophy again, inspired by Messi, who was seven when Argentina previously won the competition in 1993.

Over the past three decades, Brazil have been the dominant team in South America, collecting five of their nine trophies since ending a 40-year drought in 1989. They were back-to-back winners in 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2007, off the back of a golden generation of Brazilian talent, including Ballon d’Or winners Ronaldo (not the superstar from Portugal), Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka.

Chile had a golden spell in the mid-2010s, winning back-to-back trophies in 2015 and 2016, the only two wins in their history. Paraguay and Peru have also won it a couple of times, and Bolivia and Colombia have one each, both winning as host nations.

The knockout stage consists of three rounds: the quarter-finals, semi-final and final, one fewer round than the European Championship.

In the quarter-final stage, teams that finished top of their group will play against a team that finished second. If a team progresses past that stage, they will play the semi-final. If they’re successful there, the July 14 final awaits.

Extra time will only be played after the final, if the score is level. Quarterfinal and semifinal games that are level after 90 minutes will go straight to a penalty shootout.

Vinicius Jr was the key behind a much-improved performance for Brazil after a frustrating opening to the tournament against Costa Rica on Monday. As well as his goals, he was a constant threat, with Savio and Lucas Paqueta also on the scoresheet.

“Vinicius practically played a perfect game, created dangerous passages of play, and was always really dynamic and direct,” head coach Dorival Junior said afterwards.

“Everything that we want from these players who posses that individual quality.”

Vinicius Junior hasn’t been in the happiest mood recently: the Real Madrid forward said the Copa America is “always really difficult” because of the way he feels players are treated by tournament organisers CONMEBOL.

Vinicius was speaking after starring for Brazil in their 4-1 win over Paraguay at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Friday. Vinicius Jr, 23, scored twice — his first goals at the world’s oldest international tournament — to put the nine-time winners in a strong position to qualify for the knockout phase.

Speaking after the game, however, he raised issues he has over playing in the competition, with the small fields — which have been a high-profile topic of discussion so far in the United States where the tournament is being held — and officiating particularly concerning to him.

“The Copa America is always tricky due to the pitches, the referees and the way CONMEBOL treats us. It’s always really difficult,” Vinicius Jr said in an interview on the field.

“We have to keep working because we can only talk about it when we win. Whenever we speak up, CONMEBOL tells us we’re talking too much. That’s the truth.”

When it comes to Neymar and the Brazil national team, the temptation — for the casual observer, at least — is to assume that we’re now firmly into epilogue territory.

Neymar is 32 years old. He moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in August last year, embracing near irrelevance at club level. He suffered a bad knee injury nine months ago and has not played since. Even before that, he had appeared a fading force in physical terms, that lovely gazelle spring of his early years a distant memory.

In international football, meanwhile, there has been a changing of the guard. Fifteen players have made their senior Brazil debuts since Neymar’s most recent cap, which came against Uruguay in October. Endrick, the Real Madrid-bound 17-year-old, is his nation’s new darling. Rodrygo is wearing the No 10 shirt and Vinicius Junior is the player the Brazilian public clings to in moments of peril.

Game over, then? Have we reached the end of the Neymar era?

Not a bit of it.

There’s a lot of optimism about this team. Luis Diaz is a true global star and a game-changing presence any national team would covet. James Rodriguez still has the ability to open up a defense with this vision and clinical passing. When he wears the Colombia shirt, the former Real Madrid No 10 plays at another level.

Overall, Colombia is a solid side from top to bottom. Their harshest critics back home have issued an ultimatum: either win the Copa America or accept a role as a second-rate side when compared to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

Again, history is not on Colombia’s side when it comes to elevated expectations. The scars from the 1994 World Cup, also in the U.S., in which Colombia was deemed favorites but finished last in their group with two defeats in the three matches, remain unhealed. Colombia won its lone Copa America in 2001, as the hosts against a weakened field (Argentina withdrew late on over security concerns). They reached the semifinals of the 2016 and 2021 tournaments.

The time is now for Colombia to showcase the talent it possesses and lift a trophy against the best in the region.

Despite a national team replete with European-based players (only one player from the squad plays in the Colombian league), Colombia still battles against its history at major tournaments.

The previous Copa America in 2021 was yet another example of them coming up short on the big stage, as they finished third after losing to eventual champions Argentina in a semifinal penalty shootout. The lack of a championship mindset continues to leave Colombia in the second-best category among South America’s top teams.

Tactically, they can be exposed in central midfield. Lorenzo believes 32-year-old James Rodriguez can still be Colombia’s talisman a decade on from his starring role at the 2014 World Cup but the playmaking No 10 will not be counted on to track an opposing midfield runner.
