F1 Austrian Grand Prix LIVE: Sprint race Direct

If you hadn’t already guessed, this weekend’s meeting is the home race for the team who’ve dominated F1 for the last few seasons — Red Bull — and after their three-time world champion Max Verstappen picked up back-to-back race wins for the third time this season in Barcelona, they’ll be confident of recording another top-podium finish on home soil.

Red Bull will hope Verstappen, his teammate Sergio Perez, and their sister team Racing Bulls-Honda RBPT’s drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsuonda can all table top-10 finishes in Spielberg, but know that their number one, Verstappen, has a fight on his hands after being pushed all the way by Lando Norris last weekend; the McLaren hot-shot qualifying on pole and recording the race’s fastest lap.

When is the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix?

The 2024 Austrian Grand Prix takes place over 71 laps of the 4,318-kilometre Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The full schedule can be found here:

Practice 1 — 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. ET on June 28

Sprint Qualifying — 10:30 a.m. to 11:14 a.m. ET on June 28

Sprint — 6 to 7 a.m. ET on June 29

Qualifying — 10 to 11 a.m. ET on June 29

Race — 9 a.m. ET on June 30

The Austrian Grand Prix has been staged intermittently on the F1 calendar since first being held at the Zeltweg Air Base in 1963, with the Red Bull Ring, formerly the Osterreichring, hosting ever since. Those periods have included 1970-87, 1997-2003, and 2014-present, with the success of Red Bull in recent seasons suggesting this event will be on the circuit for many years to come.

That victory saw Verstappen extend his title lead to 71 points over Norris in second, and these two drivers will start on the front row in Spielberg. Dutch driver Verstappen looked imperious in qualifying and grabbed pole position by beating the British driver by 0.404 seconds. Mercedes driver George Russell will start from third, with the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz in fourth and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in fifth.

Taking place at the Red Bull Ring, the home circuit of the team featuring a defending three-time world champion in Max Verstappen, who winning the Austrian Grand Prix has been somewhat of a formality in recent years — with Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes all looking to change that.

The latter duo certainly came close to doing that in Spain last weekend, with McLaren’s Lando Norris finishing just two seconds behind Verstappen having qualified on pole and recorded the race’s fastest lap. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell followed suit, and will be aiming to go even further towards the top of the podium in Austria.

It appears as though Verstappen will be tough to stop at the home of Red Bull as the reigning world champion has topped every session this weekend, so tune in to find out if he can win an eighth race of the season.

Max Verstappen is under contract at Red Bull until 2028, and, although Mercedes have made him their number one target to replace Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton, he insisted that he has no immediate plans to turn his back on the world champions.
