UK general election 2024 live: Rishi Sunak, Keir Starmer seek PM race win

When polling stations close … we will get the exit polls … commissioned by the three main UK domestic broadcasters and it’s conducted by the Ipsos agency. But how do they work?

The research organisation is backed by the three main British broadcasters. They go to 130 different polling stations around the UK, find people who have just voted and ask them to recreate the vote on a replica ballot paper.

About 20,000 people across the UK are polled in this way and the results are then collated by political scientists, who try to figure out what’s going on.

In recent years the exit polls have been more accurate than in the past in predicting results, so they are likely to give us a clear idea of who is going to win this election.

Polling stations around the country will close at 10pm local time (21:00 GMT), where about 46 million voters are eligible to elect 650 MPs.

Exit polls will come out shortly after the polls close which will provide a suggestion on which party has won and is expected to lead the next government.

‘I have no confidence in any party,’ says voter
As voters head to the polls to cast their ballots in the general election, some are disillusioned with the parties hoping to win.

“I have no confidence in any party. They are not good enough to run the country,” Robin Moore, a 60-year-old architect in Rotherhithe in east London, told AFP.

Barakot, however, a 20-year-old university student, is more optimistic.

“Lots of things are going on, the cost-of-living crisis, being able to buy a house is so hard. It’s the right moment to vote, hopefully to get the right people in” the government.

“It’s good for everyone if we see some changes,” she said.
