Romania were far from favorites to top Group E but managed to emerge from one of the tightest groups at the tournament top of the rankings largely thanks to their impressive 3-0 victory over Ukraine. Winning a group should on paper give you a more favorable draw, but Romania have been given a pretty tough matchup in the Round of 16 as their reward.

However, while the Netherlands are theoratically a fantastic side with quality throughout their ranks, they have rarely shown that at this tournament. Euro 2024 has seen several major nations underwhelm and the Netherlands, who finished 3rd in Group D, are very much on that list. The Oranje’s defeat to Austria in the final group stage match was a sign of their defensive woes even if they managed to score two goals themselves through Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay.

Romania team news

Nicusor Bancu’s yellow card in the game against Slovakia equates to a one-match ban for the left-back due to an accumulation of bookings. So either Vasile Mogos or Deian Sorescu should come in as the replacement in the XI, with Andrei Ratiu shifted to the left side.

Razvan Marin is fit for the tie, while Ianis Hagi, Dennis Man, Florinel Coman and Valentin Mihaila are all in contention to join Denis Dragus in the three-man frontline.

Romania possible XI: Nita; Mogos, Dragusin, Burca, Ratiu; R. Marin, S. Marin, Stanciu; Hagi, Dragus, Coman

Netherlands team news

With the exception of Joey Veerman, who was forced off due to discomfort in the Austria loss, Dutch manager Ronald Koeman has a full-strength squad at his disposal

So with Xavi Simons in the fray, Tijjani Reijnders will switch to a deeper role alongside Jerdy Schouten – who is back from a ban.

Memphis Depay should keep his place upfront.

Netherlands possible XI: Verbruggen; Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake; Reijnders, Schouten; Frimpong, Simons, Gakpo; Depay

After a shocking 3-2 defeat to Austria in one of the most thrilling group stage matches of Euro 2024, the Netherlands find themselves in an unexpected third place. Despite this setback, their four-point tally secured them a spot in the Round of 16 as one of the best third-place teams, keeping their title hopes alive.

However, the Dutch team must significantly elevate its level, having displayed vulnerabilities in their first three matches. Romania, the underdogs in this encounter, are well aware of these weaknesses and are confident in their ability to challenge the Netherlands. Buoyed by their performance against Ukraine, Romania believe they have the tools to pull off an upset and advance further in the tournament.
