City traffic to be affected by milling

City of Portsmouth work crews will be milling some city streets beginning on Tuesday (Oct. 8) in preparation for paving.

The streets include: Williams Street, Eighth Street, Campbell Avenue, Bihlman Avenue, Flint Ridge, Forrest Drive, Indian Drive, Ruhlman Avenue, Seneca Road, Sheridan Road, Stagecoach Lane, and Taylor Court.

Motorists in the area should expect road closures and delays.

Waverly business receives federal grant

ACJM Investments in Waverly has received a $80,591 grant to purchase and install a 39.9-kilowatt (kW) roof mounted solar array. This project is expected to save the business $6,675 in annual energy costs and generate 42,930 kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to power three homes. This energy efficiency upgrade will offset nearly 115-percent of the business’ annual energy consumption.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development in Ohio State Director Jonathan McCracken announced this week nearly $1 million in grant funding for five projects through the Rural Energy for America Program. These grants help Ohio farmers and rural small businesses invest in renewable energy systems or make energy efficiency improvements to lower operating costs.

Open burn ban extended for some counties

While Scioto and Pike counties are no longer under the open burn ban, neighboring counties Jackson, Vinton, and Gallia are.

Despite many areas of Ohio receiving measurable rain over the past week, numerous counties throughout the state are still experiencing drought conditions. As a result, the Ban on Open Burning that was initially ordered on Sept. 6 by Ohio State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon remains in effect for two dozen counties that have been identified by the United States Drought Monitoring System map as still being in the “Extreme Drought” or “Exceptional Drought” categories.

Under the order, if any part of a county is identified by NOAA and the USDA as being in those two categories, the entire county is included in the burn ban.
