CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson has been cleared for contact to his surgically repaired shoulder, but he’ll sit out his second straight preseason game when Cleveland hosts Minnesota this week.
Watson spent Saturday night’s preseason opener against Green Bay on the sideline as the Browns were beaten 23-10 by the Packers.
The team is taking a cautious approach with Watson, who underwent shoulder surgery in November.
However, on a Zoom call on Sunday, coach Kevin Stefanski said Watson will participate in this week’s joint practices against the Vikings.
Minnesota will visit the Browns’ practice facility on Wednesday and Thursday before playing the Browns on Saturday.
Stefanski wasn’t specific about how much Watson will do against the Vikings, saying only that “he’ll get his work done versus them in a controlled setting.”
Stefanski also confirmed Watson is OK to have contact, though he’ll be protected in the sessions against the Vikings.
Watson has thrown virtually every day in training camp, occasionally taking a break by mimicking throws in some drills.
The Browns kept him out of the preseason opener as backup Jameis Winston started and played one series.
Tyler Huntley finished the first half, and second-year QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson gave Cleveland a little spark in the second half by completing 14 of 18 passes for 134 yards.
The 28-year-old Watson fractured the glenoid bone in his right shoulder while rallying the Browns to a win over the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 12.
The injury was another setback for the former Pro Bowler, who has only played in 12 regular-season games since 2020 for a variety of reasons.
He sat out the 2021 season in a contract dispute with Houston.
Watson was then suspended 11 games by the NFL during his first season with the Browns, who signed him in 2022 to a $230 million contract.
Watson went 5-1 in six starts last season, and was finally looking like himself again when he got hurt.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Deshaun Watson’s next start has been penciled in.
Cleveland’s quarterback, who hasn’t played in a game since breaking his shoulder in November at Baltimore, is scheduled to play in the Browns’ preseason finale on Aug. 24 in Seattle.
Coach Kevin Stefanski revealed his plans for Watson before practice on Monday.
Watson did not play in the Browns’ exhibition opener against Green Bay last weekend, and will be held out of this week’s home game against Minnesota.
Watson will also get in some work during controlled practice sessions against the Vikings on Wednesday and Thursday.
Stefanski said Watson has been medically cleared to take contact, but quarterbacks are typically off limits in joint practices.
Watson has made good progress in recovering from surgery, and at some points has been ahead of schedule.
He’s thrown nearly every day in training camp, and appears to be a go to start the regular-season opener against Dallas on Sept. 8.
The 28-year-old Watson made only six starts last season before suffering a fractured glenoid bone against the Ravens.
Watson played the entire second half with the injury, and completed all 14 passes while rallying the Browns to a 33-31 win.
Watson underwent surgery a few days later.
The Browns signed free agent Joe Flacco, who led them to the playoffs.
Stefanski intends to implement the same plan as in years past and play his starters a little in the preseason finale.

Seattle for Harris
CLEVELAND (AP) — Nick Harris has been hiked back to the Browns.
Cleveland reacquired the veteran center in a trade from the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday — after backup Luke Wypler suffered a broken ankle in Saturday’s exhibition game against the Green Bay Packers.
Harris was drafted by the Browns in 2020.
He spent three seasons with Cleveland, missing all of 2022 after suffering a knee injury in the preseason opener.
The 25-year-old signed a one-year deal as a free agent with the Seahawks in March.
The Browns sent a sixth-round draft pick in 2026 to Seattle in exchange for Harris, and a seventh-round pick in 2026.
Wypler was No. 2 on Cleveland’s depth chart behind starter Ethan Pocic.
Wypler was carted off the field in the first half against the Packers, and coach Kevin Stefanski said the second-year lineman from Ohio State will have surgery.
