Mohawks rally past McClain for OT win

GREENFIELD —Simply put, the Northwest defense, the arm of Ethan Ferguson and the legs of Carter Runyon rallied the Mohawks to perhaps an upset victory last Friday night.

That’s because the visiting Mohawks, against the McClain Tigers, scored a touchdown apiece in the fourth quarter and overtime —and overcame all 13 of the Tigers’ tallies to capture a 19-13 non-league overtime triumph.

Northwest, which was shut out 26-0 at Piketon in the season opener, went to 1-1.

The senior standout Runyon, in amassing 121 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, raced 20 yards and into the end zone on his final attempt —giving the Mohawks the 19-13 win.

In the fourth quarter, Northwest tied it at 13-13 — on a 22-yard pass completion from Ferguson to Brendan Vice.

The Mohawks missed the point-after conversion, and the contest subsequently went to OT before Northwest prevailed.

Ferguson attempted just one other pass, and completed it for 11 yards, as Andrew Newman was 3-of-6 for also 33 yards with one interception for the Mohawks.

Vice made three receptions for 59 yards, but the run-oriented Mohawks did most of their damage on the ground —rushing 52 times for 244 yards, and amassing 21 first downs to the Tigers’ six.

Northwest held the football for an hour and five minutes and 25 seconds of game time —more than double McClain’s 28:51.

The Mohawks also overcame two lost fumbles, and withstood two Tiger field goals by kicker Zane Adams (29 yards in second quarter and 27 yards in fourth) —and Owen Sykes intercepting Newman and returning it 47 yards for the Tigers’ lone touchdown.

Adams’ extra-point kick made it 10-7, but Northwest’s defense was stout all game —stymieing McClain for only 14 rushing yards on 22 attempts.

Cohen Six was 7-of-12 for 89 yards passing for the Tigers, which did not convert any of their six fourth-down tries.

Northwest was 1-of-3 in that statistic, and 5-of-12 on third-down snaps.

Runyon ran in from four yards out in the first quarter —putting the Mohawks on the board as Maddix Spriggs kicked the extra point.

Runyon then finished the game with his 20-yard TD jaunt in overtime.

Fellow senior Colton Campbell added 60 yards on 14 totes, and Ferguson finished with nine carries for 29 yards.

The Mohawks returned to the road, and returned to non-league action, on Friday night at Huntington.
