WEST PORTSMOUTH- Local golfers paid tribute to the Portsmouth Elks Country Club last weekend while also raising money for a great cause, the Scioto Heritage Trail Byway.

Fourteen teams took part in the Tri-State Hickory Golf Tournament. The day featured the use of vintage wooden golf clubs. Some golfers also chose to wear golf clothing inspired by that which would have been worn by the Elks’ first golfers.

The Elks was designed by worked renown Donald Ross. It opened in 1924. Ross designed courses throughout the United States and Canada. Ross-designed courses in southern Ohio are: The Elks, Chillicothe Country Club, and Athens Country Club.

Ross, a Scottish national and professional golfer who died in 1948, is considered one of the top golf course designers of all time.

The Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail allows travelers to take in the majestic natural scenery of southern Ohio while also tracing its history. The trail begins at the Scioto County Welcome Center, 342 Second St. It follows the Ohio River into Shawnee State Forest and near ancient moundbuilders’ sites, the remnants of the Ohio-Erie Canal, and the boyhood homes of both cowboy movie and TV star Roy Rogers and professional baseball manager Branch Rickey, who in 1945 signed player Jackie Robinson to the major leagues. This broke the color barrier in professional baseball.
