Locals graduate from state fire academy

The Ohio Fire Academy has announced its second graduating class of 2024, which consists of 19 cadets from across the region.

Scioto County cadets who graduated on Friday are: Tanner L. Queen, of Portsmouth, from the Portsmouth Fire Department; and Jacob M. Stevens, of West Portsmouth, from the New Boston Fire Department.

Members of this graduating class represented a wide range of backgrounds and diverse experiences.

Fourteen members of this class are from Ohio, four are from Pennsylvania, and one is from Michigan.

The Ohio Fire Academy’s cadet training program is among the most challenging in the nation, requiring cadets to undergo rigorous physical and mental training to prepare them for the demands of firefighting.

The academy’s commitment to excellence is evident in the success of its graduates, which are highly sought after by fire departments across the state.

Fight hunger, stock the trailer at the Scioto County Fair

Farm Credit Mid-America and the Scioto County Fair are excited to announce the return of Fight Hunger, Stock the Trailer.

Presented by Farm Credit Mid-America and sponsored by Rural 1st, this friendly competition helps junior fairs raise food donations for local food banks across Ohio.

Now in its fourth year, Fight Hunger, Stock the Trailer is just one of the many ways Farm Credit Mid-America gives back to rural communities while supporting local agriculture.

From Aug. 5-10, local community members are invited to bring non-perishable food items to the Scioto County Fair.

Look for Stock the Trailer signage at the fair for locations to donate.

At the end of the fair, the total weight of all donations will be calculated, with first, second and third-place prizes of $5,000, $3,500 and $1,500 awarded to the fairs that raise the most food throughout the summer.

Each participating county fair will receive $500.

All prize money awarded supports local junior fair activities, including attending statewide junior fair conferences, investing in new technologies, and in some cases, purchasing additional items for donation.
