Team effort lifts East over ‘Hounds

SCIOTOVILLE — Junior running back Cam Justice rumbled for 137 yards on the ground with two touchdowns to power the East Tartans over visiting Manchester 46-14 on Friday night at newly-named Jim “Snuffy” Smith Field at Allard Park.

Norris McKinley had a banner night for the Tartans (2-0) with two touchdowns, two interceptions (one a 12-yard pick-six) and 62 yards rushing, while Dylan Fitzgerald added 46 yards rushing and one score.

“We kind of have a three-headed monster out there in Cam (Justice), Norris (McKinley) and Dylan (Fitzgerald),” East coach Adam Bailey said. “You never know which one will make a big play. Hopefully it will continue to be like this all year. We have a very unselfish team, and all support each other.”

Last week, McKinley posted 207 yards rushing with three TDs, Justice had 114 yards on the ground with a touchdown, and Fitzgerald rushed for 109 yards with two touchdowns in the season opener against Zanesville Rosecrans (42-30 East win).

“That’s what it takes for us to win. We need unselfish players and that’s what we have,” Bailey added. “We need all three of them to do their part. One player will step up when a defense focuses on another one. The line did a great job tonight and opened up some big holes.”

McKinley got the ball rolling when he scored on a 23-yard TD run with 11:02 to go in the first quarter on the drive’s fourth play.

Justice added the two-point conversion run, and East led 8-0.

Justice added to the lead for East when he rumbled 27 yards into the end zone with 6:51 left in the opening quarter.

Jagger Childress’ conversion run gave the Tartans a 16-0 advantage.

Then, with 3:22 to go in the first, Fitzgerald plunged in from a yard out for the 24-0 lead —with Amani Brown’s extra-point two-point run.

“We just got off to a good start,” Bailey added. “We had an early rhythm, and everyone was doing what they were supposed to do.”

Manchester switched game plans on its next drive and went to the air.

Quarterback Mason Gilliam culminated the eight-play drive with an 11-yard TD pass to Ronnie Elam with 34 seconds left in the first period.

But the Tartans countered when Justice darted into the end zone on another 27-yard TD scamper on the drive’s third play — for the 32-6 lead.

East running back Brown then got into the action, and scored on a two-yard touchdown run that was followed by a Kaiden Huston to Keagan Barker conversion pass for the 40-6 advantage.

McKinley then added a defensive touchdown — when he picked off Gilliam and returned the interception 12 yards for the score.

“He read the ball tonight and had a couple of picks,” Bailey said about McKinley. “He and Amani (Brown) did a great job getting downfield and blocking on some long runs.”

Manchester lost Gilliam on the play to injury for the remainder of the game.

Logan Neria filled in for Gilliam, and connected with Elam for a 35-yard TD pass with two minutes left in the third quarter.

East (2-0) will travel to Miller for Friday night’s non-league game.
