Portsmouth Waterworks Department workers were deep in the ground at the corner of Fifth and Chillicothe streets around 9 a.m. Thursday, attempting to repair an eight-inch major water main feeder line.

“We’ve got it isolated right here,” Water Maintenance Supervisor Gary Kelly, said, standing next to the hole. “Water came up here all around the intersection. It was coming out everywhere.”

While two of the workers, Stuart Davis and Mark Tindall, Jr., were in one hole, another crew, with the use of a backhoe, were digging an adjacent hole.

Kelly said the break occurred Wednesday night.

“It happened last night about 9:30,” Kelly said. “We have been here all night.”

This was the second break in more than a month.

Crews from Portsmouth City Water Department responded to a large water break at the corner of 10th and John streets on July 7. The break interrupted water service to many homes and businesses on one of the hottest days of the year.
