Fans see intense racing on Fan Appreciation Night at PRP
by John Stegeman, PDT Sports Editor
Those in attendance at Portsmouth Raceway Park on Saturday got more than their money's worth.
In front of a packed house courtesy of the $5 admission Fan Appreciation Night Josh McGuire dominated a caution filled late model race.
McGuire built an early lead from the pole and though defending track champion Jackie Boggs tried to challenge on restarts, McGuire was untouchable.
Everyone else was quite touchable however as a three-car wreck on lap No. 3, a caution on lap 12, a wreck on the attempted restart after the lap 12 caution and a lap 19 wreck that saw one car slam the turn one wall made for an eventful evening.
Kenny Christy, the points leader as the night began, was involved in several of the accidents but worked his way back to finish fifth place.
Boggs took second to overtake Christy in the points lead by 10 points.
The late model feature contained high emotion with a large crowd feeding the atmosphere and points on the line causing a handful of driver altercations on the track.
"It was just intense racing," PRP co-promoter Chuck Greenslate said. "You have those nights where every driver fights for every single spot. The track was very racy tonight and the drivers were extremely competitive tonight and sometimes they maybe pushed the envelope above and beyond."
In the modified division only seven cars remained to take the checkered flag with Doug "The Buzzard" Adkins leading the way for his fifth win this season.
Evyian Terry picked up five points in his quest to take the points lead from John Melvin in the limited lates and Jeremie Bretz continued his winning ways in the bomber class.
Bretz earned his sixth win of the season despite hard challenges from Joe McGinnis.
Portsmouth Raceway Park will take next weekend off before coming back for the River Days Rumble Lucas Oil Series 75 lap feature on Sept. 5. The Lucas Oil race will pay $10,000 to win and will be televised on tape delay on the Speed Channel later this year.
NOTES: An ambulance responded to the track Saturday as modified driver Blake Childers suffered an injury during a wreck in the B-Main. Early reports were that Childers injured his foot.
The Lucas Oil race will not count for late model track championship points, meaning drivers in that division will have a max of three races left to make up points.
PRP unveiled another deep fried treat Saturday to add to an already impressive list of concessions deep fried snickers.
