Americans are a people of choice. We utilize the voting system to determine our future. And in recent years we have chosen to give away more and more of our freedoms and liberty in exchange for free money from the government. And, since that has been the choice of the voter, so be it. In a day when a government agency is targeting conservatives, spying on its own people, and not sending military help into a place where Americans are being killed, I have to keep reminding myself - we chose the trade-off - freedom for dollars.
When America became a nation, people went off to Washington as a duty, many saying they would go, but after four years they wanted to get back to the farm. Now, we have career politicians, who have only one goal - to get relected. I am amazed at people who refer to career politicians as “public servants.” Have you looked at their salaries? their allottments? their benefits? Instead, what has happened is that we have become the servants to that government. But again, I must remind you and myself, that we voted for it, and we asked for it.
But just for one day, I would like to pretend we are just as we were when this country was founded. George Washington said - “Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.” That should ring in our ears on the Fourth of July.
America was founded as a Republic, not a Democracy. Remember? “…and to the Republic for which it stands…” People have a right, not to happiness, but to the pursuit of happiness. There are probably four generations that have passed since the American Dream disappeared. The American Dream is - if I work hard - save my money - invest in the future - take care of my obligations - share with those less fortunate - and stay out of trouble - there is a chance I can succeed, and yes, maybe actually become wealthy.
America was founded by wealthy business people who came here to escape the tyranny of the king. Remember? - “…they pledged their lives, their FORTUNES and their sacred honor…”
Though Americans are taxed to the max, we are still the most generous people on earth. We can be counted on when there is a need. Americans gave after 911, Katrina, Sandy, and every other disaster. And Americans will continue to give, because it is at the center of who we are. What we consume does not identify us. What we give identifies us.
So let me aim this column at the select few of you who still wipe away a tear when the flag passes, or you hear TAPS, or you see a soldier return to the arms of his or her children. You are still a great people. You are unlike anyone else in the world, because you can remember why we came here, what we fought for, and where our place is in the world. You love God, your family, your community and your country, with all its flaws, and in that order. You believe in accountability and honesty. You believe in protecting your family and your country, and that doesn’t make you a hero - it just makes you an American.
Happy Fourth of July.
