Before you take that boat out onto the water, you might want to check to see if you are required to take a boating education course. If you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, you are required to take the course in order to operate any craft greater than 10 horsepower.

The Ohio Boating Education Course will be offered July 20 at the Scioto County Field Office in Franklin Furnace, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft. The fee for the course is $5 which covers the cost of course materials.

“It’s about an eight-hour course,” Carl Vance, area supervisor for the Division of Watrecraft, said. “Seven hours of instruction and an hour for a written test. We usually start at 8 a.m., and we usually give about an hour for lunch.”

The Ohio Boating Education Course covers a variety of boating topics such as the navigation rules of the road, boating and personal safety equipment, navigational signage, Ohio boating laws and much more. Approximately 12,000 Ohioans complete an approved boating safety education course each year.

“Our instructors are, of course, watercraft officers,” Vance said. “It’s a NASBLA (National Association for State Boating Law Administrators) approved course, and it’s nationally recognized. So once you take your course and pass the class, you’re accepted in all the other states that have a requirement for any kind of boating education certificates.”

Interested persons may register to take the course by calling 740-353-7668.

For additional information on Ohio’s boating requirements, education classes and other boating opportunities and programs, contact the Division of Watercraft at 740-353-7668 and visit the agency’s web site at www.ohiodnr.gov.
