The Sojourner House located at 1702 Highland Ave., Portsmouth, held an open house on Friday to show interested members of the community their expanded location. The location now includes the house at 1706 Highland Ave.

Established in September 2010 by Carmen Josey of Portsmouth, Sojourner House is a transitional living home for women who struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.

“This is big house (1702 Highland Ave.) is for newcomers. Once they have graduated and if they do not have housing, we will transfer them to this house (1706 Highland Ave,)” Josey said. “From this house the women will look for work and learn ways to be independent.”

She said the second house will be used to help transition participants out of the program and into a home life.

Josey said the women of the Sojourner House come on recommendations of the jail or a local treatment facility.

“When the women come to us they are homeless and are trying to recover from drug and alcohol addiction,” Josey said. “We bring them in and they get a safe place to live and start them on the road to getting their life back together.”

She said during their time at the Sojourner House the women are busy applying for housing, working towards their G.E.D. and if they have a G.E.D. and want to go to college, help is provided to them get into places such as Shawnee State University.

Josey said other programming of the house includes, classes on budget management, labor skills, job seeking skills, educational and cooking classes and many other classes and programs.

“We are hoping at the end of the day they will have all of the tools they need reunite with their family and or children,” Josey said.

She said there are currently six women staying within the Sojourner House and with the opening of the house next door that can expand to 10.
