The annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is set to take place this weekend at the Scioto County Fairgrounds.

Opening ceremonies for the event are set to take place at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21 with a survivors lap and the annual survivor dinner served at 6:30 p.m. The dinner is offered free of charge to cancer survivors and a guest.

After the survivor dinner there will be an auction, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Every year a group of volunteers organize the event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Prior to the event in 2012, the group set a goal of raising $94,000. By the time the event concluded, they had raised $117,000. The fund raising goal for 2013 is $115,000.

Rosie Williams, the Scioto County Chair, said, “All of our lives have been touched by cancer in some form or another and when it comes to you having to face the loss of a loved one, or the potential of losing your own life, events like this becomes real important.”

Williams said there are 33 teams signed up to participate in this year’s relay. She said teams have been busy working to raise money and awareness for the event throughout the year.

As the event progresses throughout the night, teams will continue to raise funds through the selling of various items and food.

Other events are set to take place throughout the relay include the lighting of the luminaries.

“One of the favorite parts of the Relay for Life is the lighting of the luminaries that contain the names of those being remembered by their loved ones. They could have passed on or they can also be remembered because they survived to have more birthdays,” Williams said.

Luminaries can be purchased from any member of the 33 Relay for Life team members.

Also throughout the night there is expected to be a plethora of entertainment from 7 p.m. through midnight to entertain participants.
