Shawnee State University has named Jeff Bauer, Ph.D., their new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Bauer began his teaching career at Shawnee State University just out of graduate school in 1987, and he will take the dean’s chair following the retirement of Tim Scheurer, Ph.D.
“Jeff’s experience, both inside and outside of the classroom, will help us to continue to move our academic programs forward to meet the needs of students, faculty, businesses, and communities - today and into the future,” Dr. Rita Rice Morris, SSU President, said. “He has been a part of Shawnee State’s growth for many years and we look forward to working with in this new role as Dean of our College of Arts and Sciences.”
Bauer was the first full-time faculty member in geology at SSU when the university began. In 1996, he was promoted to professor. He has served in numerous leadership positions at SSU including chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, interim associate provost, interim dean of Research and Community Development, president of SEA, and chair of numerous search and other university committees.
“Last night when I came home, I began to realize what a big change this will be for me,” Bauer said. “We have an excellent group of faculty and good programs in arts and sciences; however, we will have to respond to some important challenges in order to keep our college moving in the right direction.”
Outgoing dean Dr. Timothy Scheurer announced his retirement in September. After completing graduate school at Bowling Green, Scheurer began his career at Franklin University, in Columbus, in 1977 and left in 2001 to become chairperson of the Department of English and Humanities at Shawnee State University. In 2006 he left the English Department to accept his current job as dean. In addition to his administrative duties, he also teaches a course a year covering a variety of subjects such as Adolescent Literature, American Poetry, Organizational Communication, and British Literature.
Scheurer plans to return to Columbus, where his wife and family have lived all-along while he commuted to Portsmouth, and will spend his retirement writing. He already has ideas for stories, plays and musicals.
Bauer’s term as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will begin July 1.
