Although all of the pieces aren’t available for assembly, the parts available for Portsmouth Post 23 and coach Jack Branon have stepped up to show signs of a well-oiled machine.

Post 23 won back-to-back games for the first time this season Monday night with a two-game sweep of Morehead (Ky.) Post 126, capped off by a 3-2 win in five innings in the finale. It came off the heels of a 6-4 win earlier in the day has Portsmouth victorious in three out of it last four games.

“I think both of the pitchers threw well,” Branon said of Brady Johnson and Luke Morgan, the two who took the hill for his club on the night. “Both of them seemed to have the same problem, just the struggle of getting the ball up a little bit. They didn’t make as many good pitches as what we had liked but they made enough to win.”

Just like the opener, Post 23 took the lead in the first inning. After an Alex Shears triple, Brady Johnson knocked him in with an RBI single.

After Morehead tied the game in the top of the third, Portsmouth responded in the bottom half of the frame when Brady Knittel scored on a passed ball. Post 126 tied the game again in its next at-bat before Daulton Kenyon’s attempted sacrifice-turned-fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fourth went awry and allowed Tanner Poage to score what turned out to be the game-winning run on a fielding error.

Morgan struck out six, walked three, hit a batter and allowed three hits in his five innings of work to earn his first victory in two summer decisions.

“His (high school) coaches all told me he was pretty hard to ruffle,” Branon said. “He’s a kid that he doesn’t have to worry about a lot. He just goes out there, he pitches, he loves to pitch and he does a great job.”

Shears was 2-for-3 in the second game while Knittel, Johnson and Matt Penix accounted for the other three Post 23 hits.

Portsmouth will host Waverly Post 142 Tuesday for two seven-inning contests in District 7 play.
