OAK HILL, Ohio - University of Rio Grande head softball coach Kristen Bradshaw has announced the signing of Oak Hill High School’s Alex Kuhn for the 2014 season.
Kuhn, a 5-foot-5 middle infielder/outfielder/pitcher, batted .400 and had a .891 fielding percentage for head coach Scott Lewis’ Lady Oaks, who finished 6-19 and who were eliminated from post-season play with a loss to Alexander in district semifinal action.
Kuhn was a first team All-Southern Ohio Conference selection and was also named to the All-Southeast District first team.
“It’s an amazing feeling to know that I’ve made it this far and that all of my hard work is paying off,” Kuhn said. “Playing college softball is something I truly started pursuing when I first started playing travel ball when I was nine years old. I can’t wait to start my collegiate career and to start living my dream.”
Kuhn also earned first team All-SOC and second team All-District honors as a junior after being named to the All-SOC second team and All-District honorable mention list as a sophomore.
She was also an honorable mention All-SOC pick as a freshman.
“We’re excited to be adding Alex to our softball team. She’s a true athlete,” Bradshaw said. “She has so much passion for the game. She’s a competitor and not afraid to get dirty when playing the middle infield. I think she’ll bring energy and a great attitude.”
Kuhn, who plans to major in either Social Services or Middle Childhood Education, chose to sign with the RedStorm after also receiving interest from NCAA Division II Cedarville University.
Kuhn cited Bradshaw as one of the main reasons she decided to sign with Rio.
“When I met with coach Bradshaw I knew I wanted to play on her team,” she said. “Her enthusiasm toward the team and the game was so inspiring. I wanted to be a part of it.”
Kuhn pointed to her work ethic and positive attitude as her personal strengths, but admitted that she’d like to improve on the mental aspect of her game.
“I tend to overanalyze things sometimes when I just need to relax and trust my ability,” she said.”
“I just want to always keep myself in great condition to be able to play to the very best of my ability,” Kuhn added. “I not only want to be on the team, I want to be a contributing member in leading the RedStorm to a successful season.”
Kuhn is the daughter of Rob Kuhn and Robin Phillips of Oak Hill.
