Jerry Lee Evans of West Portsmouth is leaving the area Monday to travel to Washington state to participate in a cross country motorcycle race.

According to an informational letter detailing the trip, the “race is called The Stampede. The race begins on the West Coast and ends on the East Coast. This year’s race begins at Tokeland, Wash. and ends at Rockingham, N.C. The race takes place during the month of June.”

The letter states Jerry is 71 years old and has been riding motorcycles for more than 50 years. He has attempted this race the past two years and was ridding his 1979 Triumph. The engine blew out both years.

“The first year I tried the race the motor blew up in St. Francis, Kan. I loaded it in a Uhaul took it on to South Lake Tahoe, rebuilt the motor. We left from there and I blew it up again in Austin, Nev.,” Evans said. “Last year I got it home a rebuilt it again. Last year I started out and blew up in Memphis, Tenn. and had to turn around and come home.”

In preparation for the race this year Thiel’s Wheels of Upper Sandusky, Ohio donated a new Triumph for Evans to use for the race.

When asked why do this race again given his track record, Evans said, “Why not? A Triumph has never completed this race in the eight years it’s been going on. If I would finish the race I will be the oldest guy to ever do it and it would the first Triumph to complete the race.”

Evans said he is not nervous about the race and is excited about the trip.
