Evelyn Graff Hughes


Evelyn Graff Hughes, 95, of Elon, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Monday evening, May 20, 2013. She died at home after a difficult but brief stay in the CCU at Alamance Regional Medical Center. She was formerly a resident of South Charleston, W.Va. for 65 years.


Evelyn was born Jan. 18, 1918, to the late Harry and Carrie Graff of Haverhill, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Miles Besco Hughes, daughter Carol Ann Snodgrass of Buena Vista, Va. and brother, Johnny Graff of Wheelersburg, Ohio.


She is survived by sons, Miles G. Hughes (Rochelle) of Phoenix, Ariz., Gary L. Hughes (Carol) of Glenelg, Md., Patrick W. Hughes and Russell L. Hughes (Barbara) of Elon, N.C.; and daughter, Rose Evelyn Byrd (Rolland) of Mebane, N.C. and brothers Joe Graff (Wanda) of Haverhill, Ohio and Arval Graff (Blanche) of Portsmouth, Ohio. Evelyn had six children, seventeen grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.


A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Haverhill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Grice officiating. Burial will follow in the local Haverhill Cemetery. A reception will then be held for family and friends back in the Community Center at the church.


Friends may also call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday morning at the church prior to the service.


Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, Ohio is coordinating the arrangements.
