Kevin E. Johnson, the only person who filed petitions to have his name on the November ballot to become Third Ward City Councilman, may have opposition after all. According to the Scioto County Board of Elections, Lance Richardson, who resides in the Third Ward, has taken out a paper in anticipation of being a write-in candidate for that position.
A spokesperson for the Board of Elections said Richardson has not filed that paper yet, and like anyone else considering becoming a write-in candidate, must file by Aug. 26.
Meanwhile, with the announcement on Monday night of the resignation of current Third Ward City Councilman Nick Basham, the city has sent out a request for applications from citizens interested in filling that position for the remainder of the current term which ends at the end of this year.
According to Portsmouth City Clerk Diana Ratliff, interested applicants must have been a resident of the Third Ward for no less than six months and of the city for no less than three years. Interested persons should mail their resume with a cover letter to: Portsmouth City Council, Municipal Building, 728 Second Street, Room 24, Portsmouth Ohio 45662. They can also, if they choose, hand deliver their resume to the City Clerk’s office at the same address. The deadline for Submissions is noon on May 22, 2013. The City of Portsmouth is an EEO employer.
Basham said he and his wife have chosen to move to Lawrence County to be closer to their jobs as teachers at Rock Hill High School.
