Those who participated in the local Operation Christmas Child packing party in October may have noticed a film crew from Samaritan’s Purse, filming some of the activities. The results of that filming were released in a 3:27 video titled ‘The Power of Prayer.”
Gaylene St. Leger Cox, OCC spokeswoman explained how the video crew came to Portsmouth.
“I had written something for Samaritan’s Purse, about what we in Portsmouth do for our packing party and with whom we partner. The underpinning of all of it is prayer. We pray for guidance, how many boxes to pack. We also prayer for guidance for all volunteers, how to collection more than the 100,000 items it takes to pack 9,000 shoe boxes,” St. Leger Cox, said. “As a result of all of that, the videographers chose to come and do a video about how we prepare for the packing party and how prayer is truly the underpinning of everything we do.”
She said throughout the process of packing, shipping and receiving a box for OCC, there are many aspects.
“There are people who pack the boxes. Then there is the other side of the box, the people who distribute the boxes in more than 102 countries and the children who receive them,” St. Leger Cox said. “The videographers are the ones who travel around the world producing materials for Operation Christmas Child. They (videographers) only chose five sites in the United States.”
As of Monday afternoon there were 645 views of the video on YouTube.
“We are looking forward to getting a DVD of the video so we can share it locally with some churches and those we’ve partnered with,” St. Leger Cox said.
The video can be found on YouTube and on the southeast Ohio OCC Facebook group.
She said local efforts are ongoing to prepare for this year’s annual packing party.
“We have not turned the corner on getting small stuffed animals to be put in the boxes. We only have about 600 and we are in need of at least 8,000,” St. Leger Cox said.
She said there is a laundry list of items they are in need before the annual packing party.
The southeast Ohio region of OCC has a goal this year of packing 40,000 shoe boxes this year.
“Last year (2012) our southeast Ohio team goal was 25,000 boxes. We filled 35,600 boxes, 10,949 of those boxes came from Scioto County,” St. Leger Cox said. “Even though we far exceeded our goal last year, they usually add another 10 - 15 percent for a new goal.”
She said the group is currently working and keeps praying about filling the gift boxes.
