The month of May is National Foster Care Awareness and Appreciation Month, and the Scioto County Children Services said they are urgently seeking more foster parents in the community.

In 1853, the Children’s Aid Society was founded in response to the problem of orphaned or abandoned children living in New York. Rather than allow these children to become institutionalized or continue to live on the streets, the children were placed in the first “foster” homes. According to Children Services, there were nearly 500 substantiated cases of child neglect or abuse in Scioto County in 2012, and that number has increased significantly from the year before.

“With the increase of children in custody, we have a big need for foster parents in our community; people that would be willing to take children in and willing to work with the families and work toward reunification with the family,” said Children Services Supervisor Lisa Thomas.

The office reports there are more than 400,000 American youth in foster care, and an estimated 12 million foster care alumni in the U.S. representing all walks of life. The month of May each year is reserved as National Foster Care Awareness and Appreciation Month. In recognition of this month-long event, Scioto County Children Services will be hosting a banquet on May 23 in appreciation of their foster parents.

“Words cannot express the gratitude that we have for their continued loyalty and service to our children. Their acceptance and dedication is amazing. We feel truly privileged to work with such a remarkable group of people,” said Lindsay Hall, a caseworker at Scioto County Children Services.
