The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is set to take place on Saturday. The letter carriers association has teamed up with Shawnee Labor Council and the Common Cause Agency to help coordinate events.

According to information provided by United States Postal Service (USPS), in order to participate all people have to do is put non-perishable donations in a bag by your mailbox and the items will be delivered to a local foodbank.

According to released information the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is in it’s 21st year and is always held the second Saturday in May.

In 2012 letter carriers collected enough food to provide millions of meals from 10,000 communities around the country.

According to promotional material about the event, “Last year’s drive marked the ninth consecutive year that people donated more than 70 million pounds of food to the Stamp Out Hunger food drive. With more than 50 million people, including nearly 17 million children facing hunger in America, the fight for hunger relief continues.”

“The Postal Service is proud to again join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, and other partner organizations to conduct the nation’s largest single-day food drive,” said Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe in a released statement. “With more than 50 million Americans living at risk of hunger, food banks across the country continue to experience record demand for emergency food assistance. Together, we are helping to address this demand and making a difference in the lives of millions of Americans in communities throughout the nation.”
