A 10-run first inning was more than enough of a cushion for Wyatt Bazler on the mound Monday as host Northwest defeated New Boston 20-3 in five innings.


Bazler, who struck out four in three innings of work, was hit by two pitches while Wade Gillette was hit with another. Phillip Cassidy was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in.


The Mohawks travel to Valley Wednesday to open SOC II play.

Zack Phillips’ single in the bottom of the sixth to score Taylor LaValley was the difference Monday as host Clay defeated nonconference foe Manchester 5-4 for the Panthers’ first win of the season.

LaValley and Zach Jackson, who went the distance with 12 strikeouts for the win, each had two hits for Clay. The Panthers host New Boston Wednesday.

A Peighton Williams grand slam in the bottom of the fifth was the highlight of a six-run frame for Portsmouth in a 7-4 win over Green.

Williams also had a triple to help Erica Seison earn her first win of the season. The Trojans travel Tuesday to Fairland.

Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the third, host Clay scored 10 of the game’s final 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth to defeat Manchester 14-4 in five innings Monday.

Autumn Griffith, who earned the win in relief, was 3-for-4 with a triple, stolen base and two RBIs while . Marissa Messer, Alisha Shepherd and Rachel Cooper each had a pair of hits for the Panthers, who travel Tuesday to Waverly.

The Waverly Tigers opened the 2013 tennis season with a 4-1 win over Clay Monday at Mound Park.

Monday was the opener between the two clubs as well as the official first day of action for tennis throughout the state of Ohio. The Panthers travel Tuesday to Minford.
