Area McDonald’s restaurants and the Autism Project of Southern Ohio are teaming up to host “Light it up Blue Night” tonight. The event is being held to raise funds and awareness for the Autism Project of Southern Ohio.
“This is a special day (April 2) set aside for Autism, with the whole month of April Autism Awareness month,” said Mike Bell, President of the Autism Project of Southern Ohio.
He said from April 1 to April 7, people can go into area McDonald’s locations and for a dollar donation they can purchase a puzzle piece that will have their name on it and displayed in that location’s windows. Participating locations include Wheelersburg, Portsmouth, Rosemount and Vanceburg, Ky.
“Tonight from 5p.m. - 8p.m. at the Portsmouth McDonald’s we will receive a percentage of their sales. We will also be on hand to give out information about Autism and we will have some Autism items available for sale,” Bell said. “We are also going to attempt to light the building up blue, in honor of the night.”
He said this event serves as a good opportunity for the Autism Project of Southern Ohio to promote who they are and what they are about.
Bell said all of the money raised from the Light it up Blue Night and the sale of the puzzle pieces will stay local to help fund some of the many activities of the group.
“I think people need to come out, to find out what Autism is. With Autism, it just does not effect the family, it’s within the community and it takes a community to help raise a child with Autism. They recently changed the stats on Autism now it effects one in every 50 people,” Bell said.
The Autism Project of Southern Ohio meets every second Saturday of the month at 6 p.m. at Daymar College in New Boston.
