Approximately 65 new jobs are on their way to Lewis County, Ky. Nelson Brothers, LLC, a leading manufacturer of bulk emulsions to the surface mining industry in the eastern United States, announced Thursday that they will build a new $17 million emulsion plant in Lewis County. The plant will create approximately 65 full-time jobs and an estimated 100 jobs during the construction phase of the facility.

“We are looking forward to the addition of the Nelson Brothers emulsion plant to our community,” Todd Ruckel, Lewis County Judge Executive, said. “We have been working closely with them to move this project forward and know that it is going to offer a positive economic impact that will be visible throughout the community. As of December, 2012 we had an unemployment rate of 11.7 percent and the jobs offered by this plant will be welcome by everyone.”

The plant will bring an estimated $5 million into the Lewis County economy each year in payroll and benefits. The average salary and benefits are projected to be $75,000 a year. The plant will manufacture the company’s emulsion products, which will be transported to open-pit surface mines and to distributors in the quarry and construction industry in the Appalachian region as well as across the eastern United States.

“Lewis County is an ideal location central to the markets we serve and will enable Nelson Brothers to effectively manage our distribution channels to best serve and supply our customer base,” Jon Giesen, Director of National Accounts for Nelson Brothers, LLC, said. “Lewis County is a very progressive community. We have received overwhelming support from the community, county and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, which played a significant role in our decision to locate our emulsion plant in Lewis County and invest in this area.”

Nelson Brothers, LLC officials told the community they are proud of their safety, environmental and compliance record and that they strive to achieve “sustainability performances superior to standards for the mining services industry. Through various safety accountability programs, the company emphasizes safety awareness and daily compliance to all company, state and federal regulations.”

With more than 400 employees and operations throughout the United States, Nelson Brothers, LLC has supplied over 5 billion pounds of its flagship emulsion product to the mining and quarry industries. Nelson Brothers, LLC worked with the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development and the Lewis County Judge Executive in making the decision to locate in that community.

Nelson Brothers, LLC is in the final stages of acquiring approximately 1,155 acres of land in Lewis County. Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in April, 2013 with an expected completion date of Nov. 30, 2013.

Nelson Brothers, LLC is headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., and is a joint venture between Nelson Brothers, Inc. and Orica USA Inc. Founded in 1956, Nelson Brothers, Inc. has grown from a small, family-owned Alabama business to one of the most recognized names in the mining services industry. Orica USA Inc. is a subsidiary of Orica Ltd., a publicly traded company on the Australian Securities Exchange. Orica is the world’s leading provider of commercial mining services solutions that are safety-focused and cost-effective.

Nelson Brothers, LLC was formed in May 2000 by these two companies.

“Nelson Brothers, LLC provides superior services and technical solutions to open-pit mining customers in the eastern portion of the United States by focusing on the customer, delivering quality products and leading-edge technical engineering support,” a news release read.
