Columbus native Shawn Harper played his college football at Indiana University and went on to play in the National Football League, including a stint with the Indianapolis Colts. Harper suffered an injury while playing in the NFL, which led to the abuse of drugs. There came a point when he turned his life around, and now he will be telling his story Sunday at 10 a.m. at Impact Youth Sunday program at the Cedar Street Church of Christ in Christian Union.
“He went to a point in his life where he decided he needed something more,” Cedar Street CCCU Youth Pastor Corey Sullivan said. “He got a relationship with Jesus and from then on has just gone around the entire country speaking and teaching and preaching and motivational speaking.”
Sullivan will be addressing the members of the church to motivate, challenge and share the gospel with the teens of the church as well as visitors, according to Pastor Gary Heimbach.
“The purpose of this is to not only mobilize the youth that go to our church, Cedar Street, but also to seek out teenagers and families who do not go to church on a regular basis, and getting them in the doors of the church this Sunday morning to hear the gospel presented in a genuine and real way,” Sullivan said. “He will also be doing some of his feats of strength. He used to be on the traveling Christian Power Team.”
Sullivan said Harper will be challenging the youth of the area to reach other teenagers in the community.
“If there are teenagers there who do not have a relationship with Jesus at that time, that this is the day to commit,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan said Jacob Marburger of Parkersburg, W.Va., an Ohio Christian University graduate, will lead the worship service.
“We’re expecting 300-plus, and we just know that God is going to do great things on this Sunday morning,” Sullivan said.
