Carolyn Staker, 63


Carolyn Kaye Staker, 63, of Portsmouth, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at her home. She was born March 12, 1949, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Zora Euclid and Vivian F. Horner Phipps.


Carolyn was an educator for more than 40 years. She was passionate about teaching, especially the Spanish and French languages. She was currently teaching at both the Sciotoville Community Schools and Shawnee State University. She received a Bachelor of Education from Ohio University and had attended Ohio University-Portsmouth. She was a member of various teaching organizations, a 1967 graduate of Portsmouth High School, and Carolyn was of the Lutheran faith.


A devoted wife and mother, Carolyn is survived by her husband, George Victor Staker, Jr. whom she married Dec. 19, 1971, in Portsmouth; her daughter, Lori (Jon) Bedick of West Portsmouth; and her sister, Marilyn F. (Steve) Hemphill of Portsmouth.


In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a nephew, Kenny Hemphill.


Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth with Rev. Donald Moeser officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park.


The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services Wednesday.
