Lewis County, Kentucky law enforcement officials believe they have broken up a multi-state theft ring with the recovery of a large amount of stolen items from a West Portsmouth residence.
According to Lewis County Sheriff Johnny W. Bivens, his department recovered over $20,000 worth of stolen property Thursday night, resulting in the arrest of three Lewis County residents.
Bivens said his department had seen an increase in residential burglaries and thefts during the months of October, November and December. He said his deputies spent “countless hours” investigating the cases, following leads and conducting undercover surveillance in Kentucky and Ohio.
Bivens said, through those investigations he and his deputies traveled to Scioto County and met with detectives with the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office. A search warrant was obtained and executed at the residence of Gary Hughes and Misty Walters White, on Ohio 104 in West Portsmouth. He said that is where deputies recovered a 2011 Polaris RZR with a trailer and several other items, including firearms, which had been stolen from Lewis County. Deputies also seized $3,000 cash and drugs.
Arrested were Joshua Stevenson, 22; Dean Allen Cooper, 22, and Aaron Howard, 21, all of Garrison, Kentucky. Bivens said individuals were traveling to Ohio and trading stolen items for prescription pain medication and cash. He said additional charges are expected as the investigation is continuing.
